Nantong Mixed-Use

Location: Nantong, People's Republic of China

Scope: Landscape architecture

Size: 34 acres

Program: Pedestrian shopping promenade, outdoor dining, water feature design, bike parking, programmed fountain

Description: The landscape design concept for this collaborative project with MulvannyG2 architects is inspired by The Kite - a graceful object and a prominent icon in Chinese history. Forms and spaces of this outdoor shopping destination were influenced by the triangular systems and patterns associated with the Kite. When used and repeated in different techniques, powerful outdoor spaces begin to take their unique shape.

The main arrival court with its vibrant hierarchy represents the center piece of the kite itself. Here, a programmed water feature dances below the kite-themed art gracing the sky above.  Attached to the central water feature, the forms of the ribbon street mall reflect the kite string dancing in the wind and take on a gentle form to influence exploration of the retail corridor and invite the guest into the space.

The elegant yet playful design of the project will create a memorable experience while setting the standard for creative and distinctive retail projects of the future.
